PHOTOGRAPH OF THE WEEK - 16 October 2006

Mike Nicholson

'Just been browsing through the Photos of the Week on MetVUW.com and have been stoked at the variety and quality of the photos submitted, so I thought I would put in my 5c worth. This was taken at 7:08 on 7 September 2006 in Papatotoe, Auckland. The sunrise was quite messy with Cbs rolling in from the west. It was just starting to rain when I took this shot, the bands inside the primary bow were quite visible but unstable in appearance. A polarizing filter was used. I used a Pentax*ist DS, 18-55mm zoom set to 20mm, ISO 200, 1/750th sec at f/8' wrote Mike.

Bob Larsen

'I enjoy the weather photos and information on your web site. I took the attached photo this evening (28 May 2006) from our house in Tawa, Wellington just after sunset. Taken on a Nikon 5700 camera at 1/4 second' wrote Bob.

Tony Travaglia

'Hi James ...attached is a moon halo as well as the 22° halo there is the small ring around the moon as well, the 22° halo, persisted for about 2 hours..' wrote Tony.

Paul Moss

'I had the fortunate experience of seeing both the sunset and an opportunity for low cloud to act as a neutral density filter on Friday, in Plimmerton. I simply drove up the hill far enough to ensure that the sun was approx at the lower edge of the closer cloud, and watched the scene play out. So it's an in-camera composition, no photoshop apart from crop and shrink. I did use the classic ND filter that has a clear lower half and denser upper half, and positioned that to just reduce the sun without reducing the lower scene' wrote Paul.

Pam Stevenson

'Your website is great and so informative. Thought this pic would interest you, taken about 14:15 this afternoon, 2 October 2006. Now we know how New Zealand breeds tough yachties like Sir Peter Blake!! Note the little Opti's sailing off Bucklands beach despite the dramatic storm approaching!!' wrote Pam.

Andrew Blackler

'Hi James, a spectacular cloud show over the Huna's from West Auckland. Towering cumulus over Auckland airport, a post frontal formation often seen from the West' wrote Andrew.

Dan Forster

'I took this photo Monday morning 2 October 2006 at around 8:00 from Arapuni Village (South Waikato region) looking to the West at a large spiral vapour trail formed by a plane, I presumed to be circling due to fog at Auckland Airport. To the right of the photo you can see the southern flanks of Mt Maungatautari. The photo was taken on a Sony Cybershot H1. I am a Civil Engineer working for Mighty River Power at Arapuni Dam' wrote Dan.

Pam Constable

'I follow your pictures of the week with interest, being both a cloudwatcher and a photographer.

I wondered if you would be interested in this shot I took at the same time as my flight began the descent into Sydney on 6 September 2006 at around 16:00. We were at 38,000 ft and there had been that same flat cloud plateau all the way across the Tasman. Suddenly I saw these high 'cloud mountains' (they are cumulus clouds Pam) rearing up out of the flat 'plain' and they appeared to be almost boiling within their structure.

When we landed it was fine and pleasant, but some 6 hours later there was a huge storm in Sydney. 100mm of rain overnight, or as they said on the TV news, the highest amount in such a short time in the past 100 years. I couldn't help wondering if it was engendered by the clouds shown here' wrote Pam.

This could quite possibly have been the case Pam.

Hi, I love your site and always check ahead before embarking on one of our many fishing trips on the Hauraki Gulf. I thought visitors might enjoy these photos taken on the 28 June 2006 on a Panasonic DMC-LC5 when yet again the forecast was all good. Little Barrier in the background behind Flipper' wrote Glenn.

Ten minutes later the rain could be seen moving up Wellington Harbour.

We have heard of the 'Canterbury or Nor'west arch'. Perhaps this cloud in the lee of the Tararuas should be called the 'Tararua arch' or the 'Wairarapa arch'. As in the case of the Canterbury arch the cloud shown here formed in very strong nor'westerly winds. Photograph taken from Taylor Street, Carterton at 14:46 on 24 September 2006.

The arrival of yet another cold southerly front in Wellington looking east from the University towards Mount Victoria at 16:01 on 16 October 2006, taken with the wide-angle 12-24mm Nikon zoom set at 12mm (equivalent to 18mm on a 35 mm camera).
