PHOTOGRAPH OF THE WEEK - 2 March 2007

At last, more fabulous photographs of the skies around New Zealand and one from Antartica. Apologies for the delay - we hope you agree its been worth waiting for.

Gary Briggs

'Taken 11 October 2006, early afternoon, Lake Pukaki with Aorangi in the background' wrote Gary.

Joe Hansen

'Thought you might be interested in this cloud shot I took it from where I live on the outskirts of Masterton in December 2006. It looks like a giant bird flying from left to right. We use your weather site all the time, keep up the good work' wrote Joe.

Fiona Samuel

Fiona wrote 'Took this photo out the window whilst heading north on the Desert Road at 18 :29 on 23 November 2006 on the way to the Taupo Cycle Challenge.

Nick Calavrias

'As a private pilot I often refer to your site for forecast information - very helpful. I wanted to share an image my father and I took on a flight just out of Wanganui heading south along the coast at approx 1500ft. There were approx 6 very isolated rain cells within several miles of each other moving from the Tasman over the coast. Image taken early 2006' wrote Nick.

Gary Prior

Gary wrote 'Absolutely love the MetVUW site. I thought I'd send you a pic I took late afternoon on the 19 April 2006 whilst out fishing in the Tiri channel off the end of the Whangaparaoa peninsular just north of Auckland, an area usually renowned for being rough!'

Nita Smith

I thought you might be interested in this photo for your MetVUW site. Its not in NZ but it was taken on a flight to the Darwin Glacier to do NZ based antarctic research and I thought it was cool.

The cloud on the north side is localised to the McMurdo sound area and it was overcast and dull at Scott base, but beautiful to the south on our helicopter trip 300km down the Transantarctic mountains. The range pictured is Minner Bluff' wrote Nita.

Wayne Wilson-Wong

Wayne wrote 'I have for a few years now been developing a process of photographing under moonlight - which is of course reflected sunlight. Meaning, given the correct exposure is set, normal colour and tone will be present much like in daylight conditions. It tends to create a rather surreal low contrast look, add the red/yellow hue from near by street lighting like we see in the foreground rocks in 'Mc Naught's Comet over Piha'... and it all comes together with great effect.

Technical specs: Taken around 22:30 on a Canon 20D with a 50mm lens, exposure F-1.4 'bulb' for about 55-65 sec.'

Tim Homes

Tim wrote 'I though you would like a photo of the thunderstorm that broke over Wanganui on 7 February 2007.'

Andrew Blackler

'Taken on Sunday 11 February 2007, near Rotorua town centre at 0645. Lenticular cloud reflecting the sunrise - the event lasted only 15 minutes, burning off with the sun' wrote Andrew.

Heuchan Hobbs

'I took this photo from my back deck at home in Karori, Wellington looking east. Saw this cloud with the ice crystals spliting the sunlight, photo was taken with a Nikon 5700 Digital Camera' wrote Heuchan.

A beautiful example of cloud iridescence Heuchan.

Debbie Jarvis

'The shot of the plane shadow/rainbow circle was taken on a flight from Auckland to Sydney on 16 February 2007, about 30 minutes before landing in Sydney' wrote Debbie.

This is called a Glory, for information on how these form, together with much more about atmospheric optics, check this excellent site.

Micky Waby

'This photo from my living room window viewing out to the north-west at 21:28 on 26 December 2006 was the brightest and widest primary bow I had ever see. I have not enhanced the colour in any way. The sun had just set it was quite dark as you can see by the house lights in the foreground. I used a Nikon D70 18-70 lens at 38mm F4.5 1/8sec.

I really enjoy your site and pop in most days for a browse' wrote Micky.
